Hey all, hoping someone has some insight for me. My D2, serial 5U 17116, needs the water pump seal replaced as it's leaking. I do not have a copy of the service book and it appears none is on the forum Library either. I have a copy of the D4 7U service manual and it says you can remove the water pump without pulling the radiator, but looking at my D2 it appears the water pump has a long stud that would necessitate pulling the radiator to pull the pump forward off that stud? Am I on the right track there, as I do not really want to pull the radiator off if it's not necessary.

Thanks - Anthony

Cat engineers in that era did not believe in giving any more room than was needed. In many cases less than an 1/8 of an inch of clearance. The Service Mans Reference book also expects a level of knowledge that many of us are struggling to gain. Not having a D2 or working on one I cannot say how clear the book might be, on the small details.

Well for anyone who’s interested I got the water pump pulled off last night in about 45 mins. I had to pull and unthread the unreasonably long stud, thread the pulley completely closed and I was able to get just enough room to slide it out the right side.

I have a late model 5U and it took 3 tries from Florin Tractor to get the proper seal. You might just go straight to Caterpillar for the part. The parts manual was not real clear.

A question??? I see an alternator on your 5U. Is that an available aftermarket kit or did you have to piece it together?

The alternator was already on the tractor. I have seen lots of different ways to mount an alternator, but these are by far the cleanest and most factory looking. Unfortunately, I do not know who made the casting originally.
