Machine has been running fine. I parked it on the trailer and it set for a few weeks. The next time I started it to try and move, it goes into gear OK but soon as I put the clutch in, I can hear it catching but it will just barely start to move the tractor and then disengage.

Not in gear properly or gear selector lock problem. Try all gears?

Tried all gears, same problem. It’s like it wants to slide into gear OK but just won’t stay

What is an interlock mechanism and is it adjustable?

Open the cover over the clutch and see if all the links in the over center mechanism are all hooked up. This happened to me. The cotter pin came out of the pin retaining the links. The clutch disk became crooked and tore all the teeth off the disk. Look in there and see if you can see any broken teeth in the bottom of the clutch compartment.

Yes, there are some broken teeth. I will check for the loose over center left mechanism next. When I reach inside to feel the linkage, there does seem to be more play on some than others. I’ll check that next. Thank you

I am confused .........does the shifter stay in gear when you engage the clutch and the clutch pop out again

Or does the clutch stay engaged and the shifter pop out?

Or do both stay in place and the tractor fails to move?

While the tractor is sitting there instead of moving, what happens if you pull on the clutch? What about the shifter?

Can you pull the clutch back hard and get the tractor to do anything?

Do you have to snap the clutch in (back) and out (forward) or does it just mush back and forth without snapping?

If its snapping in and out, your clutch disk teeth are stripped off the outside edge. New clutch disks for the 4u/5u tractors are available aftermarket from general gear. I don't know the current availability of the thinner disks for the J series. The later u series have the clutch that can be removed from the top without pulling the engine.

OK, thanks for all the replies. Based on those replies and what I’m seeing inside, it looks like there are teeth that have come off the clutch disk. My next question is am I looking for a drive plate or a pressure plate. In my service manual it shows teeth on the drive plate. What I can’t tell, is, are there teeth on the pressure plates that engage that drive plate as well? Getting ready to start searching parts. Thanks

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
