Is there any issue with putting a muffler on my D2? I know they came with just a straight stack but I have been contemplating installing a muffler. Think I have seen some with mufflers installed. Pros? Cons?

Some of them are more of a spark arrestor/rain diverter unit, but they do muffle the exhaust somewhat.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I also have one for the pony which I find obnoxious unmuffled - just a generic muffler I picked up from the local shop

I'm looking at installing a generic tractor muffler from our local farm store. I've been pushing snow with this D2 all winter and the exhaust is getting a little annoying.
I have a tank heater installed on it and have started it at -20F without any issues

Go for it - you can always take it off at some point if you want, whereas restoring your hearing is another matter

D2 5U parts book list a spark arrester 3B7914 and a rain trap 6F6518 for the main motor, and separate mufflers for the pilot motor too, my local Cat Dealer doesn't show the mufflers being available but for the early D4 the 3B6217 muffler becomes 247-2671 and is a very reasonable $43 here in Oz, cheaper than the $2,000 set of hearing aids you will need after driving the D2 without a muffler or ear muffs for a few hours....

What Mike and Neil say!
I keep a set of ear muffs around the tractors and a pair in my truck for easy access as hearing loss is cumulative over time!

I farmed with a 5U D2 for 20 years with no problem. In 1986 I got a 7U D4. It came with one of those rain trap things and a rain cap. It was pretty quiet. One day it blew apart and I was left with a straight stack about 10" long. The sound was bad but I wanted to finish the field I was working. In just a few hours I knocked out my hearing. It is worse in my right ear because I was looking over my left shoulder a lot. I had a big old muffler that came from an auction so I stuck it on there. I like the muff type hearing protection, they put me in a whole different world when operating. Those plug things do nothing for me.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
