  • Hoping to tap into the memory bank of an experienced Cat service guy. I recently replaced the steering clutches and brakes on my 96J D-5. That was all pretty routine but my trouble is getting the steering control cover to time up correctly with the splined shafts on top of the transmission case. During disassembly I did not pull the small cover on top of the steering control so as to see the position of the roller levers or the corresponding pistons that they mate with. The service manual appears to show the pistons pushed all the way back in their bore and the roller arms within 1/8th inch of contact, however the cover will not mate with the splines in that position. If I clock the the arms one more spline, it will go on but that creates a 1” gap between the piston and roller. Here’s a couple pictures to help clarify what I’m asking. Has anyone encountered this before?

You need to change the adjustment of the steering clutch yokes in combination with a 0.31" clearance between piston and roller.
