I have a D-4 7U 14437. I am having clutch problems with it. Sometimes I can get it in gear fine, then the next it acts like it is not disengaged.Move the clutch lever back and forth several times and it might work,Also when it does this the clutch lever feels like it catches on something.I have reprint of the service manual and it says the cover over the transmission has to come off to get to the clutch, later ones have a cover over the clutch that can be removed for service. My question is,is there a way to get measurements to modify the cover so that the whole thing doesn't have to come off or if this is even possible? Thanks-Kal

Yes, modification of the top cover is possible and there is a recommended method with dimensions to follow. Unfortunately I think you will want to do it with the cover off anyway. So it may not help you this time but if this is an ongoing problem it could really help.

I don't have the dimensions but remember them being posted here.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Don't forget to grease the pilot bearing

I pulled the cover on the top of the clutch and found the source of the squealing noise and the grinding gear problem. All four bolts holding the drive coupler together between the clutch and transmission input shaft were loose. This caused a snap on the clutch shaft to come off and it let the shaft move back when the clutch was disengaged and let the clutch disc come clear out of the flywheel. When I would try to engage the clutch the teeth were rubbing on the flywheel, play with the lever and it would finally slide together. New hardware and a little adjustment and it works fine.

Thanks for the report on the fix. Could be the inspiration the next person needs that comes looking for information on a problem they have.
