About two weeks ago I got my pony running again but it gradually declined to a point where it didn’t have the power to turn the main under compression. It’s had a continuous oil leak and yesterday I figured out it was coming from the magneto hole. Oil was finding its way into the magneto and causing the spark to deteriorate. I cleaned the mag out and sealed it between the flag and mag with a new gasket and some shellac to hopefully stop the leak. I tested the mag and it gave a fat blue spark but when reinstalled it won’t fire. I’m getting fuel but no spark. Ive installed solid core wires and autolite plugs per the forum suggestions. Have any of you guys run into this issue?

Have you got the mag kill switch hooked up? Might try disconnecting it to eliminate it as a possible cause.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Somewhere you are still making contact with ground inside the mag.

The switch has been disconnected and the mag works great when I bench test it. Almost seems like it’s not making a good ground to the motor.

Can you see if it will throw a spark to the mag case vs the pony block or head? The grounding seems unlikely to be the problem, but that test should eliminate the possibility. If it will throw a spark to the head nut, then connect up the plug, ground it and check again. What are the plugs gapped at?

I want to say they’re gapped at 20-25. I’ll try your suggestion this afternoon. This thing really stumps me, I think I fix it then something else happens.

The two base bolts would ground it fine. Naturally I assume you are turning it the correct direction. Oily mag could lean to mag windings? How about turning it on the mach with the cap removed and observe the points?

When I removed the mag I cleaned it, reset the points and tested it for spark. The mag windings are good because it gave a great spark with the cap on and using the same plug wires and spark plugs. It’s when it’s installed that I get no spark.

Are you sure it is turning? Always check the simple things.

Second part of turning is how fast....... I suppose that pony uses a plain, non-impulse mag like the later D2 and D4 tractors, so rpm makes a big difference.

It is definitely turning, and in the correct direction. It’s a non impulse so I’ve been pulling as fast as I can but still nothing. That seems to be the issue. But I don’t get how it was fast enough to produce a spark a few days ago but now it’s not.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
