Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the purpose of the four "clutch pressure springs" on a CAT 955C is? I was having a problem with the main clutch slipping so I preformed the adjustment and it was working well for about two hours and eventually the clutch lever would no longer come over center and snap into place ( I can still ride the clutch however). The clutch lever almost seems bound. After looking at previous threads, they mentioned that a broken spring could cause binding. If anyone could shine some light on this issue, I'd appreciate it!

Those four springs are on the retainers that hold the pressure plate to the clutch assembly, the clutch not snapping in is probably because it has tightened it self up,loosen the two locks and back the ring out to get the adjustment correct and lock it and try again, you must have got the starter to work now that you are using it.

AJ,
I will try backing the two locks off and loosening it to see if that's the issue. If it's not the clutch adjustment, I'll let you guys know.

Once we got the starter in and properly wired, I couldn't believe how well the 955 started. It is a night and day difference from the original starter. That old starter must have been going out for a while. Now it starts right up within five seconds

Please reply on your starter post how you wired the starter so it was correct for others whom may have a similar problem. We all like to hear the solution that worked.

This weekend I spent some time with the 955C, but no luck. I started by backing off the clutch adjustment approximately three inches to see if that'd help but it didn't work. It still seems to be binding. I also looked at the four springs on the pressure plate and they still seem to be in tact. I'm still able to ride the clutch, but I know something is still off. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it. In the mean time I'll keep researching and trying different things.

Why did you stop at three inches, back it off till the lever will snap in and set the adjustment correctly, you should not be riding the clutch like you are doing,if you cant get the adjustment right there may be an issue with the discs and that will mean the clutch will have to come out, what you should do is have a mechanic that knows Cats look at it for you.

Finally got some time to mess around with the 955 thisweekend. It turns out that the clutch was overly tight (as AJ thought). After backing the adjustment ring off quite a bit we were able to pull the lever back with a distinct snap. I found that when we got the adjustment ring where we wanted it and went to tighten the two locks, the clutch lever wouldn't snap into place. To compensate for this, we had to loosen the adjustment ring even more (less of a distinct snap with the lever). Then when we'd tighten the two locks down the lever would pull back with the proper snap.

Is there anything I have to do to winterize the 955C? I just took the batteries out and put it in the shed.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
