See attached pictures of the fan assembly on my Cat Thirty. While running, it sounded like a bad bearing on the fan shaft but after removal, bearings seem fine. I think it's this spring and washer making all the noise. I know this spring is what keeps tension on the fan blades, but it doesn't seem right just grinding around as the fan spins. Does it get lubricated by the oil or maybe apply some grease? Thanks.

is there any of the clutch material remaining, or is it metal to metal? was the rear key in place when you took it apart?

Yes there is material on both sides of the fan and the rear key was in place. The spring was under compression too. I looked in the parts book and I think I have all the right parts but it really has me baffled as to why there is metal to spinning metal contact in there.

The noise you are hearing is from the gears that drive the fan. I have never heard a thirty yet with a quiet fan. The spring puts pressure on the sliding collar in your picture to keep the fan clutch tight. The spring rotates with the fan shaft, there is no metal to metal spinning of the spring, it sits stationary on the fan shaft. I hope I explained this so its understandable. Study the assembly a little and you'll see what I am talking about. As for the noise, its just a quirk of the cat thirty, mine does it pretty loud. Caterpillarman

Thank you. I see now that the large washer inside the housing is sitting against a shoulder on the shaft. That is what the spring is putting pressure against to keep tension on the fan blades. :frusty:

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
