I'm sure there's a reason, but it looks like all the black dirt is now on the bottom and clay on top.

.
If this is being planted, they want to break up the hard pan dirt under top soil so future plants
will have deeper roots and water will go deeper in the ground and hold more water and not run off else ware.

Heavy farm tractors pack the ground down under to hard after a few years of use.
The top soil will still be there for deeper roots to feed off of.

Better plant growth.

They do that a lot in Holland where they are reclaiming fields. There have been videos of it on here before. It is interesting to see how much horsepower it takes to plow that deep!

You don't need to plow like that to break up hardpan. They make what's called a sub soiler that looks much like a ripper that allows multiple shanks to be pulled with a lot less HP. I have one for a Ford 8N tractor, single shank that runs about 18"deep. The ones for modern high HP tractors go deeper. Here is a link to one for less than 50HP compact tractors. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_farm-acreage+3-point-category-1-implements+category-1-cultivators-tillers . Mine is about 60 years old so it's not even a new idea.

Hi, Drujinin.
I grant that it might take a fair bit of power to pull a single bottom plow that deep but I think the issue is more one of traction in that ground.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Well what did you expect with them using Fiat Allis instead of Cat?
