Check out how PNWH did his D4. You might like how he did his. I don't know what your single battery is at the moment, but you might find it easier to start with the added cranking capacity. A pair of group 24s seem to work well here. JM

Depending on how thick it is, a grid heater at the connection between the intake tube and intake manifold might be an option, or a flamestart. My electric start D2 has the glowplugs and I'll be interested to see what the steps are to reliably get it started in winter. I'd assume at least a couple of glowplug cycles before cranking. I have no history on it but would not be shocked if I see some ether cans in the toolbox despite what the operator's handbook says.... : )
