Is there a soft plug at the rear end of the cam shaft to keep the engine oil out of the clutch compartment? I can't tell from the pictures etc. in the parts book. I would think there should be, as the block would be line bored for the cam bearings. I'm assuming that it would be behind the flywheel. The serial number etc. is D4 7U 36715 which I think should make it a 1956. If I had known that the winter would be as light as it has been, I probably would have torn into this. Usually we are under about 3' of snow with wind chills in the teens. I'm trying to work out a plan of attack, so when the weather breaks in the spring (That usually means May) I'll maybe have a better idea what to be looking for.

Hi Norm,
by my Parts Book (6U1up) there should be a 2A3696 (2 3/4" dia.) core/welsh plug in the rear face of the cyl. block in behind the flywheel housing plugging the rear cam bore.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks Ed for the info. I have the 7U27570 to 7U44307 parts book. It doesn't show that end of the engine and doesn't even list that part number. I'm sure it is on the engine but they evidently figured I didn't need that info. I hope a rust hole in that will be the reason for all the engine oil in the oil clutch compartment. I hope all the clutch components will come out the top and the flywheel is marked, I may mark it anyway. I don't relish kneeling over and "Standing on my head" for the entire job. But, if that is what it will take, that is what I'll be doing.

Hi Norm ,
another thing to check, if you have not done so, is that the Diesel engine breather is scrupulously clean.
If it is clogged with dirt/dust up in the hard to get at end of the filter medium it causes any engine blow by pressure to build up in the crankcase and push engine oil out the rear main screw type seal.
This is not a positive seal and so if you run front end high or too high oil can run back into the flywheel/clutch housing also.
Rust hole in the plug is also a possibility as you suggest.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

Ed, That was the first thing I did. I also ran the engine with the filler cap open. Still got oil in the clutch. With the tractor level, at about half throttle the clutch picked up about a gallon of oil. That seems a bit more than caused by blow by pressure.

Go back and look again. Under basic block #1H5769
Shows the 2A3696 plug that is being referred to.

The "Light goes ON"! Thanks again. I was looking on page 30 at the block and covers instead of page 25. My edumacation will probably be sloooow. I'm finishing recovering the seats (I can bring those inside) so at least something is getting done. It will be "Red" vinyl because that is what I have. Of coarse that makes it less likely someone will "Borrow" them for their machine.:eyebrows:
