This past weekend I started working on my dozer, got it broke free and running! I reused gaskets etc. just to see if I could make it run, Heres what I came across.

Cracked thermostat housing
Blows exhaust out the intake (probably just needs to be adjusted)
W.O.T is 20 PSI oil pressure (idle is scary)
its only running on two cylinders at the moment but is completely satisfactory to have it just run.

I pulled the pony motor off and just pull started the dozer, pony is free, so my questions are,
What is compression of pony engine?
Should I weld thermostat housing or try and find one?
What is normal oil pressure?
Valve lash on intake and exhaust?
I think that is all for now

Can I put videos on here? If so how?
thanks, Randy

Randy,
There's a guy in Hartford that has a bunch of D2 parts for sale. He has an ad on Craigslist for all of it. His name is Neil (269 998 7275) and I'm pretty sure he has a thermostat housing in one of his storage trailers. Search Kalamazoo Craigslist for caterpillar D2 and you should find the ad.

My fear is that if your thermostat housing is cracked, there could be other things cracked too.:jaw:

Hi,
scans below describe oil pressure from Yellow Fathers view point.
You have no problem with Oil Pressure as these old Cats are low RPM and low stressed with big engine bearing areas.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Rich,
Thanks for the info! Im going to give him a call. I had wondered the same thing, but was thinking vibration could have also caused the crack? The anti-freeze was nice and green, I didnt do a hydrometer test so i suppose it could have been off mixture.

Eddie,
Thanks for the info! I know they run slow but I wanted to make sure haha.

Drujinin,
Thanks, I'll see what i can do, will that post it on the B.B? or somewhere else? I see I can get pictures on here, I think I can figure that out... hopefully 😆

D2 water jackets are prone to freeze cracking behind the Injection Pump Housing and the Pony Cylinders from what I've seen. I've never heard of a thermostat housing crack but it's possible. Usually the upper coolant tube flange will crack from stress or vibration, that's much weaker than the housing.

By the looks of it I thought that should've cracked first too, but it is definitely the housing, once I get around to it I'm going to get some pictures on here. Got it running on 3 cylinders instead of 2! Need more valve adjusting!!
