Hi,
As well as being a life time Heavy Equipment Mechanic with a lot of Caterpillar yellow in my blood, I do have a shining towards the Ford 8n. I have two of these. One tractor had began its life under the ownership of the United States Air Force. It was used here in Newfoundland many years ago on one of the military bases that were located here. One story that was told to me was that it was used as an aircraft tug, another was that it was an utility tractor used around the air fields.

The tractor runs great, my problem is in trying to or wanting to paint it back into its military life colors. I was able to sand thru the repainted tractor's paint and found its unit number, as well the wording " US Airforce" "For official use only".  The colors under the current paint are a mix of either blue, yellow and or green. More of a blue color present on the fenders.
Does any member have any knowledge of this and what the tractor's life was. Also the color it would have been and the colors of the lettering?
Cheers
Dan

Not sure about 8Ns but I have seen several IH and Massey tractors of that vintage in various military paint schemes.  There was a Classic tractor fever video with a guy with a full set of massey military tractors.  I would assume that the military schemes were pretty standard.  Also check the Red Power forum.  There should be some info on there for any IH tractors.  Post some pictures.  It is always nice to see a unique project.

Hi CRS93082

Thank you for the info. I have noticed in some old pictures of the former US Naval Base here in Argentia, Newfoundland, that they had John Deere industrial farm tractors, and were kept factory yellow, with black lettering.
The 8n I can remember as a young boy, some 55 years ago, seeing that tractor in my uncles garage when it was badged the Us Air force lettering. Just wish I could have remembered the colors. Thanks, Dan

blue is the factory colour. there is two early or late early ford blue is lighter than late also known as FNH blue which is from when ford tractor division merged with New Holland.
it may have been a yellow for visibility particularly if it was used as a tug and many small tractors were. now a lot is painted white or dull grey. but really it doesnt matter much and can be painted "whateverwasinthetin" as its your machine your choice. if you contact the airforce historical archive they might have some period photos whether there in colour is a different question. but they may have that info.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
