D4 6u engine with air coming from number 1 pumping element. 2,3, and 4 are free of air. Have swapped elements around, but still getting air from number 1. Wondering where to look next! Could a leaking / damaged fuel filter tower gasket cause this, and if so, why only #1 pump?

Hi CC,

first of I suggest you try swapping No1 injector with No4 and see if the aeration moves to No4.

It is not unknown for the high pressure injectors to stick open or get crud on their needle seats and so leak compression/combustion back into the injection pump gallery.

If the leak rate is sufficient it can affect the other cylinders also--this sounds like a low level leak back. Contamination on the injector seat in the pre-chamber can also cause this.

Cheers,

Eddie B.
