I was up in the Olympic National forest on a road that had not been used in years. I was looking to get some pictures of a bob cat for my stepson - never even saw any sign. Any way I came across a lean to with a D4 under it. I talked to the lead ranger, and he said it had been there for all of the 17 years he had been there. I ask "Can I take it home?". He said he had to attempt to contact the original owner first. If he can not find the original owner, then he will find out what I have to do to be able to take it home. It appears to be in good shape. There is a bucket over the exhaust. I did not have my machete so could not get through the blackberry vines to get a closer look. Does anybody have any idea what it takes to claim abandon equipment on government property?

I would think that the goverment is now the rightful owner and then you would have to go thru the proper channels to purchase it.
If they are like most gov. operations they have to put surplus inventory up for auction with a sealed bid- maybe?

Good luck!

Here in the 'Zoo there was an old Case tractor on an abandoned refinery property that the City took for back taxes. I heard that someone tried going through the proper channels to buy/remove the tractor but the EPA determined that the tractor was "Hazardous Waste" and it was removed as part of the contamination abatement process. Some people just take their jobs way too seriously. Who knows what ever happened to it...:noidea::noidea:

Dont ya just love the EPA?!!! They pick on petty things like that when there are people that run there crappers right into a stream or creek and the big shots wonder why there is a problem at the beach out at the lake with strange things floating around and warnings for no swimming.

How would anyone even find the original owner? It's not like these things are registered. If the local guy is willing to work with you, definitely stay with him because as soon as the gov gets involved you are in for a mess.

I would see if you could find the previous lessee/owner of that parcel, the ranger might have access to that info.

Offer to place a public notice in the nearest major newspaper, with all the ID info of the D4, and the APPROXIMATE location, for 30 days.

That would be due diligence on your part, and might be enough for him to let you load 'er up!

If the EPA got the tractor they likely paid mega bucks to have a enviromental impact study done, then drained the oil had it shiped to a scrap yard and likely ended up 10K in the hole after paying trucking, labor and enginering fees

Here's what I'd do. First of all, find out who the rightful owner is. Second, go to one of those places that do "instant vinyl auto lettering" and have your truck lettered in that company's name. Third, get a used work uniform from a uniform rental service and also have the company name embroidered on it. Fourth step: put on the fake uniform, go load the dozer and tell the ranger that "my boss sent me out here to pick up our dozer".😈😈😈

See, it's just that simple. And the ranger probably won't ask any questions either.👍

After you get it home, peel the vinyl lettering off your truck and cut up the fake uniform for grease rags.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
