Ok, firstly I've purchased a parts catalogue. (and service + operators guide) Just now they are in the process of being shipped across the Atlantic so I won't have them for a while yet.

Today I tried to order fuel filters and oil filter for my D4 (7J5052) from the local Cat dealer but he really struggled reading the microfiche as it was badly scratched. A local chap has lent me a parts catalogue just to tide me over however it starts from 7J5104 so I can't be certain that there's been no changes to the fuel and oil systems.

I wonder if anyone has the part numbers to hand for a D47J5052 - fuel filters and oil filter, and the associated gaskets/seals would be great too?

Thanks very much

Julian.

Uses the same parts as in the 7J5104..... parts book.
The Cat number for the fuel filters is for a set of four...or a Wix #33825 individual.
Also the Wix oil filter is a #51165.

Check the oil filter housing for full flow conversion (Slotted hex top screw}
or original by-pass type with T-handle.

Right, that's good, I can cross reference those filter part numbers to Fram and Fleetgaurd numbers. I can get these locally without too much trouble and probably far cheaper that from Cat.

I've checked the filter housing on the machine and it has the hex top screw, so that would be the full flow conversion - does that part number for the oil filter still hold good?

Thanks again, Julian.

Not the same, is it the slotted hex head?
The single element full flow filter is a Wix #51161

It's a fairly deep hex head, not slotted and with no markings. Interestingly my 13/16th spanner fits it, a spanner that rarely comes out of the box since I gave up working on Boeings....

Maybe I'll just pull the filter out and hopefully it will be obvious what type is fitted? I'll wait a few days as we have a string of public holidays in the UK just now and all the stockists are closed.

Yes, it would be best to check as there were a few intermediate units that had the hex head, no slot that were still by-pass type filters.

Just for interest I removed the old filter today, Cat # 5S 0484E which according to Cat is now IR0659. In stock at the local branch at about $10. together with the fuel filters(s)

Cheers Julian

The fuel filters (all 4) cost a fair lump😞 Anyhow, not to worry, I probably won't have to do it again for a few decades! Got it properly air locked and it would only bleed out and start on two cylinders. Anyhow, with a bit of thought I investigated the slotted head screws at the base of the fuel injector pumps and discovered that bleeding these got the diesel flowing again.

One thing is a bit of a pain, despite very careful efforts to properly clean up the two gasket faces at the top of the fuel filter housing and despite using two new gaskets I still have fuel weeping from the joints. I've tightened up the stud nuts as much as I dare, ie around 4 white knuckles worth!

I won't be able to play with it for a few days now due to work, so I guess (unless someone has a better idea) I'll have to pull it apart again and smear a little Hylomar jointing compound on the gaskets to give them a helping hand. I'm guessing that these gaskets (from Cat) are new very old stock and have gone hard - they certainly felt hard to the touch.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
