I'm sort of guessing as to which system you have but it seems like the Bosch generator/regulator which uses the attached diagram.
Polarizing is done by momentarily touching the terminals with a jumper as shown by the dashed line.
Hi OM. What's puzzling me is that I know next to nothing about charging systems so 2 more questions. Your diagram shows a wire from FR to the regulator. On my reg there is no extra terminal or is that just the mounting screw? Also can't see any marking on the gen but it appears that the FL and FR terminals are reversed. Thanks for the help.

The FR is just a ground for the FRame. If there is no terminal on the regulator then ground it to the regulator mounting screw. Its redundent to the grounding through the generator mounting.
I suppose the FL/FR terminals could be reversed but the connections must be correct so that FL on the generator goes to FL on the regulator.
Can you get any numbers off the generator and the regulator?
Had to check the Bosch bible....The buss goes from FL to ground for clockwise rotation and from FR to ground for counterclockwise rotation so in your case FR is the field terminal.
ccjersey is correct....per Bosch they recommend all wiring connected except the field connection.
Then touch the generator field FR or FL cable momentarily to the regulator "Bat" terminal to polarize.
