what is the best way to remove the thermostat retaining rings without 3b7184 , tool thermosats are not bad , but i have to weld a long crack in the housing

I have been successful in removing them by grinding the head of a bolt to fit the slot in the retaining ring, and fit the bolt to a slide hammer... work it out one side at a time.

try a blind hole bearing puller most of the come with a slide hammer in the kit or can be mounted to one. and it would pull evenly. if you can get one big enough is another question.

instead of perfection some times we just have to accept practicality
