[quote="carole walker"]Auctiontime.com has a 22 listed for sale. The picture indicates it has an electric start. Is anyone needing 22 parts? I would like to get gear ring and starter off unit. The unit is in Guthrie OK and I am in TN. Anyone interested in buying and parting out the unit on a co-op basis .

Gene, good luck with that Parts tractor. My 22 also has electric start. I tried to find a replacement ring gear, because mine had many chipped teeth and lots of wear. I even went so far as talking to the folks in India who make ring gears. They said they can make the ring gear I needed, but it would cost me a few thousand dollars for engineering, and then I would have a minimum order of about 100 ring gears. I never got to asking what the unit cost would be. Sooooo, this is what I did. I removed the ring gear, flipped it over and reinstalled the ring gear, then cut chamfers on all the teeth. I hope this will work, am not at the point when I can try starting the old CAT yet.
Let me know if you get the tractor as I would be interested in some of the parts (Mag, a few bottom rollers, if in good condition, radiator support casting, fender, etc). Ray
Heard that a ring of a Ford Fiesta diesel ?? fit a 22......
heat it and take it off and flip the ring.
Ray, did you look into a ring gear with the right ID or one that the flywheel could be turned down for that resulted in the right OD and root diameter, and then had a fairly close tooth count? Tooth count could be a little bit out without materially impacting operations and longevity. I'm guessing 5%?
I suppose there's no master catalog of all ring gear with that information - wouldn't that be useful : )

Neil,
I tried them all. I did find sort of a master catalog of ring gears, and looked for the right number of teeth and OD, then looked to see if the ID was close enough to turn down the flywheel easily. If I recall correctly my NAPA jobber had such a master catalog. Also, I did a web search on manufacturers of ring gears (all in India) to see if they have one that would work. No luck. That's when I looked at having them custom made and decided I did not have the guts or money to do that. Ray
Hi Team,
seems I recall noting and being told during Apprentice School in the Engine Machining Class that ring gear teeth are first machined on to a flat strip of suitable stock material, just like a rack.
The rack is rolled into a circle and the required tooth count length chosen, cut and butt welded, the welded area is usually evident, then the inner diameter is machined for truth and size--result-- one ring gear--yes, easier said than done.
From this it would seem tooth profile is not too critical for this application or the tooth profile is chosen to allow for rolling.
I stand to be corrected.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
