Need some help. Working on my buddies D6 8U. The pony pinion won't stay engaged so I need to try adjusting the latches. This thing is different than the d3400 in my 212 grader. Where is the access to the pinion latch adjustment on the D6? I see what looks like a large pipe plug under the floor boards sort of on the side of the clutch housing. Is that the access? Thanks in advance.

yes should be a large pipeplug just behind the lever that engages the starter pinion. you have to have the pinion unlatched to be able to adjust it. there are two cotter keys, one on each adjuster plug, make sure you replace them. it may take multiple tries to get the pinion latch adjusted. I adjusted mine 1/2 a turn at a time on each adjustment plug. if you get them to tight it wont kick the pony out and can overrev the pony motor. I have also heard of diesels that wont quite run, just sit there chuffing away, and as soon as the clutch is disengaged on the pony the diesel roars to life.

May be a case of worn dog latches or stop or the stop/latches are not aligned properly.

OM, Don't say worn latches, lol. Really don't want to pull that pony to take the pinion out. This machine was well maintained and cared for by previous owners. Hoping it's just the adjustment. Thanks guys.

Seen it many times where the latch dogs don't align properly with the lobes on the stop. Sometimes requires shimming the stop to get the lobes right. Yes, it mean raising/pulling the pony to check/fix it right.
