Previous owner replaced (Cat 4B389) magneto using 16T drive gear (Cat 2A4144 that) has tapered input fitted to original magnetic rotor using woodruff key. The Wico replacement mag (Cat 4S6471) has magnetic rotor with “D” shaft instead of original tapered shaft. My adapter bushing is worn causing excessive rotational play, 8 to 12 degrees. Is anyone able to give advice on how to remedy this issue?
George, you could pick up a used gear to suit the Wico from Zimmerman or other vendors. Also check machinerytrader.com for the gear part number. Worst case, you could have a machinist replace the tapered opening on your existing gear with a straight opening for the Wico. Either that or have the machinist make a new adaptor bushing.
Neil, I found out Standard Magneto Co, Inc bought out Wico magneto. Richard is going to search for the adapter bushing. He is familiar with the adapter but with many vintage miscellaneous parts in his storeroom…. He will call me back next week.
