sounds great

If the air cleaner mount was a little bigger it could double as a canopy support

Lol. That’s really nice! Thanks for sharing! I was wondering if there was any life out there in Cat land.
You’ve inspired me to turn some dirt now. JM

Sounds good Gary! That's a walk in the park! Amazing how a 160 hp Cat will out pull a 200 hp wheel tractor. Just love it!!

Hi, ROME K/G.
Another 'Rool-of-Thumb' that I came by about 40 years ago says that it takes about 1/2 as much EXTRA in weight and horsepower in a wheel tractor to do what a crawler will do.

Just after I left school, I worked on a broad acre wheat farm in Western Australia. The next door neighbors had been farming with a D2 for years and decided to 'upgrade'. They bought the first John Deere tractor in the district, an 80 hp 'BEAST' on fairly large single tires.

After they had completed the seeding for that year, the two sons got to talking about the relative merits of the JD and the D2. Unable to reach agreement, they elected to couple them together with a fairly hefty chain for a tug-o-war.

The little D2 dragged the JD, kicking, bucking and snorting, backwards across the yard.

The only thing the bigger JD really had going for it was that it got over the ground faster.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Deas, there never was anyone using crawler tractors to farm with around here, but there was a similar demonstration with two JD wheel tractors done back in the day. In 1960 or so JD introduced their New Generation 10 series tractors with vertical cylinder engines to replace the venerable two cylinder horizontals they had been making for a (human) generation or more. It also marked a shift in design philosophy where the stock tractor didn't have the weight to use its full horsepower in the lower gears without spinning out. Horsepower in the new tractors was fully utilized at higher speeds and on pto work vs the older models that were primarily designed to PULL.

The result of the demonstration was the old 2 cylinder easily dragged the new model across the yard spinning and scratching for traction! People had to drop a plow bottom or make similar adjustments to other tillage tools to use the new tractor with 25% more horsepower than the old one they had traded in!

But in the end, horsepower does tell the tale.......pulling the narrower tool faster does get the work done faster.......usually.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I was pulling 9 16 inch bottoms covered 75 acres in about 15 hrs. The 7 could handle. More ,back when I pulled 3. STOCTON GANG PLOWS cutting over 180 inches I averaged about 6 acres an hour, they pulled HARDER. No lift heavy on the turns good plows though I still have them. 17afarmer Mike
