a friend at a fly lodge had the pup motor die and needs a direct electric starter which he has the hole in the bell housing. by the not so good pictures he has emailed the motor is not the 318 that is in the d6 9u which i'm familar with. please advise.

The 9Kxxxx series uses the D4600 and would have the same direct start arrangement as the D6-9U if it has flywheel housing provision for the starter, except there is no provision for glow-plugs with the earlier pre-combustion chambers. Where direct start was provided the D4600 used a manifold heater for pre-heat.

thansk old magnet. would the newer D4600 have electric start that you can buy off the parts counter??

If you can find one of the old original inertia drive type starters 24v, then yes it is sort of an over the counter unit, otherwise it's a conversion like you've done on the D318's.
