Hi Folks, A good friend of mine who is an ex Caterpillar mechanic has designed and built the following Starter Motor Adapter setup to allow you to start your D2/D4 Pony Motor with a battery drill. It is a tidy setup and doesn't detract from the look of the machine like some of the other work-arounds we have seen. He provides an adapter to mount to the rear of the dash as shown in the attached photos and a belt and an adapter for your drill. He has asked me to organise selling them overseas for him. The kit includes the Adapter Pulley, Drill Adapter and Vee Belt out at approx $US 550.00 (depending on your address) including FedEx International Freight to your location. Makes starting your pony motor much easier ! Let me know if you would like some more information or a firm quote to your location.

Cheers

Dave

including approximately 1 weeks delivery on Fedex International Priority freight.

I call it a Sprag Bearing (I think the bearing manufacturers call it a cam clutch). Only operates in one direction and freewheels when the pony starts.

I’m interested in this. But my dash is flat on my 5U. Is that bulb area part of the adapter that you refer to?

I assume it’s proven that a cordless drill has enough oomph to spin the pony, and fast enough?

Hi Potato

Yes, this still works on the flat dash as well. It is just mounted differently with the pillow block mounted to the front of the dash and lower down. I will get some photos of this setup for you and send them through. An 18v Battery drill has plenty of grunt to spin it (there are a number of them working already here). Can you please send me a photo of the back of your dash from the LHS. Some have pipes that will dictate where you would mount it. Otherwise, no problem.

Cheers

Hi Neil, yes we have a video coming today or tomorrow. Works exceptionally well. Also will have some photos of an installation on a flat dash machine.

Hopefully this link will take you straight to the Video of the Pony Starter working...

This is not my forte so if you can see the video could someone please post a message to say it works.

Also there is a little bit about the machine that it is fitted on that my friend made up. He calls it a D5 and it is made of a D4 7U back end and D6 Engine etc. A very interesting machine !

Thanks for looking !

Hi Dave, I just watched it successfully, thanks for posting. It really does work well, doesn't it. Seems a lot of people have battery-powered drills these days (you want a drill, not a driver) so that would avoid the need for a battery in the tractor
