Rome, what differences tell you the age/time period of the blade? I've worked on a couple of them but don't know much history of the variations.

Looks like that one still has a decent edge but the stinger got left in a big red oak at some point.

The early blades [1950's to early 60's] had the round pipe on top for the guide bar and they also had short "stingers" where the later blades had a square bar and longer stingers and wider cutting edges. The side braces were also updated in the early 70's to ball and socket type instead of the pin type. I have some photo's I can post when I get more time.

Good history lesson. All the ones I've dealt with had round tube guide bars. Were those actually Rome branded or built before Rome started producing them?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
