This is an older Hyster D4 rear cargo winch that my uncle never had a chance to mount on the back of his Caterpillar HT4 before he passed. Just sitting on a cart, rusting away. Input shaft can still be easily turned by hand, so likely still good inside. I have a few pictures, but couldn't figure out how to get them off my phone into this post. It is located in Northern Kentucky. If any interest, e-mail me: [email protected]......

I was looking at the instruction manual for this winch and it says not recommended for D4 6U and 7U tractors. What is the reason for that?

I know that the HT4 was just a D4 7U with a loader attached.

Anybody know why? It has more line pull than what the 6U and 7U weigh.

The later tractors would have used a D4N. From memory, there are some mounting and control changes. Could be the early type is not suitable for a higher HP engine?

In the same book, there was an attachment option to fit it to a D6 so I don't think it could be the horsepower rating of the later D4's.

I don't think horse power has anything to do with the limitations although the D4N is a bit stouter. I believe they are just referring to the control mounting hardware differences between the D4 and D4N as a reason to exclude the 6U/7U's. Interesting in that the 4N can be retrofitted to the models R4, RD4, D6, RD6, 35's and 40's. Probably due to a simple control system.

Did you have to modify anything for it to fit?

Yes I did have to make a few mods. Had to raise the seat ,think I used 2 pieces of 2X2 square tube under seat mounts to clear the fwd. & rev. control. Some changes to the brake control ,but I cant remember what.
