Hi I am looking for a direct starter for my Cat D7E 48A. It currently as a Pony Motor that is in need of a Magneto, Carburetor and Starter. Let me know if you know of anyone who would like to sell these part. I have the helical ring gear on mine, so the starter would need the helical pinion or I may be able to convert the straight cut pinion on the starter with a helical pinion. I am not sure if the spacing is the same, i.e. will the same nose cone work on a helical and straight cut rings gears? I do not know if that would work. Maybe some one could comment on this? Also looking to sell my Angle blade with C frame that is in good shape or trade for a straight or semi u blade for this D7E 48A. Thank You.

Welcome to ACMOC catdozer867. For the direct starter, the best place to start would be to go to the Discussion Forum and the 2nd stickie on the top of the page is full of electric starter conversion information. If you could list the Mag type you are looking for and even a picture if possible, that would help. Lots of us have extra mags around but don't always know what all they fit.

Hi Old Iron Habit and thank you for the kind invitation! Old Magnet thought my D7E 48A used a Wico magneto Cat # 1S3350 based on the casting numbers on the pony motor block and head. The magneto was missing when I purchased the machine, so I am unable to take any photos of the original magneto. Old Magnet thought the dozer pony motor I have is also used on the D8. Thank You!

Hi, I run a D7 3T which has had the pony engine removed and the starter motor conversion added. This was done before I purchased the machine. The conversion consists of a piece of 1/2'' plate milled to suit existing bolt holes and new starter motor holes and bolted over the flywheel opening. I run a Delco Remy MT40 24 volt starter motor with the 12 tooth helix gear. I have a few dramas with the huge starting currents required to turn the motor over and burn out solenoids every now and then on the starter motor. I have added a 1200 amp DC dead man switch to the battery leads which I activate after each start in case the starter motor is still engaged after a start which has happened with disastrous consequences. I also run a Delco Remy MT40 on a GM 8-71 which runs a planetary gear and keep two spare starters on hand. I swap the planetary and helix gears as required with no dramas. If you decide to go this way, the new reduction type gear starter motors would be the way to go.

Are you getting rid of the pony motor? Where are you located?

Tell me more about swapping straight cut gears with helical on the gear reduction starters? Do you change the drive assembly or do the straight/helical gears interchange? Pictures would be helful

I don't know about changing gears on the reduction type starters but the Delco Remy MT40 nose cone is the same for planetary and helix gears. When I change the gears, I leave the actual starter motor intact and remove the solenoid and the nose cone and swap them. The 19 spline Delco Remy 24 volt MT40 armature is the same length and diameter for both. The helix and planetary drives are the same length and the fork diameter is the same.

OK, got hung up on the term planetary gear. I believe your just comparing the straight cut gear with the helical gear. Not big deal to interchange.

Hi, this is my first time on this forum so not sure if this is the place to ask, but I'm curious about your 56 D6. I'm looking for just that year (or 55 or 57).
