I have a Caterpillar D318 generator. A dealer told me it was one of the oldest he has ever seen ... possibly from the late 1940s. Is there any interest as a collectors piece?
Where is it located at
Might be more like '50s based on being a D318 plus direct electric start but the serial number would tell the full story. Could you post the serial number (the one on the Power Unit tag) - can't quite make it out in the picture.
The first D6's with the D318 was 1948. No idea if the D318 was put into all applications at the same time or not.
Calif DOT had "emergency" Gen Set with very similar look. I always thought of it as an early D6 engine, station was put into service in '62 or so, the gen set failed in a big snow storm 1982. As I recall, it did not have murphy switches for temp/oil pressure, details are long lost now. - cts
