Just a quick question for someone as to the year of a D6 that I was looking at.
Serial # is 9U6110. This is a D318 right? From what I have been reading on here, the D315 and the D318 are one of Cats better/older engines. This machine could very well be for sale for scrape price. What would one of these weigh, and what is scrap going for these days.

Any info would help,thankks.

How's it equipped? Makes a big difference in the weight. You will have to get quotes on scrap locally. Really look it over hard especially if you can't drive it and listen to it run, you might pay a premium scrap price for just that, scrap!

It should be a dry clutch machine unless it was converted to oil clutch (look for the dipstick and breather on the right side of the clutch housing near the engine oil dipstick).

Engine should turn over easily by pulling on the fan while pushing on the belt to tighten it. Look it over carefully for cracks in the cooling system unless it is still holding coolant. Common places are behind the injection pump housing and governor and along the bottom of the pony motor cylinders, seems like the left side gets it worse.

Then look at and measure tracks, BOTH sides! Undercarriage can be a real deal breaker.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Some information from OzDozer posted over on ACME............

D6 2H bare tractor .. 74" gauge = 15,820 lbs (7200 kg approx) .. 56" gauge = 15210 lbs (6900 kg approx) ..

D6 4R/5R .. 5R (60" gauge) = 16630 lbs (7545 kg approx) .. 4R (74" gauge) = 17160 lbs (7785 kg approx) ..

D6 8U/9U .. 8U (60" gauge) = 16,725 lbs (7590 kg approx) .. 9U (74" gauge) = 17215 lbs (7810 kgs approx) ..

A cable angle blade for the above comes in around the following weights ..

60" gauge = 3877 lbs (1760 kg approx) ..
74" gauge = 4151 lbs (1880 kg approx) ..

The straight blade comes in at ..

60" gauge = 3335 lbs (1515 kg approx) ..
74" gauge = 3610 lbs (1640 kg approx) ..

The most common Cable Control Unit is the rear mounted, double drum, #25 CCU .. the weight of which on the D6 is 2070 lbs (940 kgs approx) ..

The Hyster D6C winch comes in at around 1900 lbs (860 kg approx) .. but a Hyster winch reduces the tractor weight by approximately 300 lbs .. as the standard Cat drawbar has to be removed, for the Winch to be fitted ..

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
