Pictures of the governor and dash from my late D4 6U. It has an early pony motor so I'm assuming governor should have a flat cap to suit a late dash.
Witness mark in dash from governor nose. I don't know how long it was run like this.

It seems every governor linkage I see has been welded up.
That is interesting. I have never given the governor/dash any thought. No "dimple" on your dash. I suppose one could make one or bore a hole out for clearance. You already have the smooth faced one, solution in hand. Never seen any gov linkages welded here.
Haus,
you indeed have the earlier style governor and its style of cap which supported the end of the sliding control shaft--the shaft is supposed to slide in said cap, which is now missing its outer material, which has exposed the shaft so I guess the shaft is now seized and the Gov. would be inoperative.
From ,memory the later Gov. should work okay on the older pony manifold.

Interesting side note here. How many have seen the instruction to remove one of the cover screws to put oil into the govenor internals. I Can't remember wher i read it and it does not seem to be in many maintenence instructions. Cow of a job if one has not removed the governor or the dash sheet. WF
I looked through all the books I have for the instruction recently WF. I could not find it. Would love to know where it is also.
I have seen that instruction on putting oil into the governor. I have gone back through my books and can't find it again. From memory theres also a picture that shows the screw removed and a teaspoon with oil in it to get the oil in the hole. I dont know why you couldn't just squirt it in with an oil can but thats what I remember seeing
I think you would need an oil can of some kind to get it in there. The teaspoon is shown for quantity.
I just gave mine a couple of healthy squirts from the oil can, tipped it up and sideways to spread it and reinstalled it.
The pony governor lubrication instructions are in the relevant engine Service Manuals and is given as 2 tablespoons full in the 5 manuals from D3400, D311, D315 and D318 I checked.
Just to be different the D4600 manual stated to leave one of the end cap screws out and with the vacant screw hole at its lowest position add oil until the oil just starts to run out--this gov. has the early style end cover with the bump on it---ie. not flat like later units.
Cheers,
