Hi all,

I spent the day working on my grandpa's D4. The tractor hasn't run in 25 years, and has been in pieces for the last 5 years. I didn't take it apart, so I am having to figure things out as I go. My goal for today was to get the pony engine set back up on it and running. I was able to accomplish that, but I have some questions.

1. What is this hole for? The hole is located on the flywheel housing just underneath the left cylinder of the pony engine. (See second picture) It is not a mounting point for the pony engine. It looks like a broken off bolt with a hole drilled through it. Since I didn't take the machine apart, I don't know what might mount here.

2. Why does this not line up? It seems like the arm should contact in the center of the drive rather than off to one side. It doesn't look like anything is bent and it all works smoothly.

3. Are these Gears useable? The transmission got water in it at some point which caused the gears to rust. I was thinking about taking a wire wheel the them to try and clean them up, but since I have it all torn apart it do you think it would be better to replace them?

Early D4's had a street el and 90 degree oiler for the starter pinion drive. Practice was abandoned. Just plug the hole.

Something isn't right, lever pad should align with the button.

Take them apart, sand or bead blast them and put them back in service.

Yes like Mag said clean them up and replace the bearings if the gears are rusted up then the bearings will likely fail too. I know its allot of work but cheap insurance to get every thing cleaned up and replace the bearings. On the pinion not lining up, check the pinion assembly before installing the pony, check the pinion bearings.

Is that bushing above the spring in the flywheel housing??? I believe that holds the sliding shaft, if its out of the housing that might be why it dropped down.

The bushing is above the spring. I will take another look at it next time I work on it. That would make sense that if the bushing has somehow worked its way out that the arm would drop down.

Mine was like that - small diameter rod was bent - doesn't take much of a bend combined with a work bushing for that arm to move off-center

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
