Hi all,
I couldn't take it any longer - I had to buy something to tinker with to relieve the monotony of sitting behind a desk all day. I bought D2-3J4086 from Shawn Duvo in Bangor PA and now I need to secure the manuals. I see my options as:
- eBay
- Jensales
- buy from someone on ACMOC or ACME

I was interested in Cat Legendary literature - they list a number of reproductions and my questions are:
- do these look "just like the originals" (same colour, binding, etc)
- they list several manuals that cover the same serial number range. Is it better to buy a later manual because it's more up to date?

Any opinions and suggestions welcomed.

As for the tractor, nothing works which is just how I like it : ) [Not quite, the left track turns - still for 900 that's ok] Should take at least years to get it going again at the rate at which I work.

I need to move it from Bangor PA to Columbus OH if anyone's interested in running a little delivery service for me : )

Cheers,
Neil.

Congratulations!

Lots of "fun" to be had with one like that.

The CAT legendary equipment literature reprints are not original binding and format manuals. They are good quality original printing, but now in an 8.5 x 11 inch size. Most of the aftermarket manuals I have seen, have usable, but not nice printing (especially of the pictures), are cheaply bound, but somewhat cheaper than the CAT ones. I bought the only CAT one I have through my CAT dealer instead of direct, so there probably was quite a bit of mark-up in the price I paid (~$80) for an operators manual 212-9T grader.

I believe there are CD's available from ACMOC members, if that would work for you. I have a microfiche of the serviceman's reference book for the D3400 engine, but it's hard to use when you're in the grease up to your elbows. Maybe that's why all my manuals have greasy fingerprints on them๐Ÿ˜„

Good luck on the transportation. It's small enough to fit on a load with other things if you can find a trucking co that goes that way regularly. Many places have a forklift or loader that will load the machine just like any other piece of freight, but otherwise, loading a dead machine probably would cost some extra.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time๐Ÿ˜„

CC, given that there's a couple of different items covering the same range from CLL, which should I get: the earliest, latest, or something else?

Cheers,
Neil

I got the latest that covered the serial numbers on my D4 7U. My reasoning is that while it covers not only the s/n of my critter, it also shows the difference between early and later models of the same model. But, they are a bit spendy!

I agree, the pictures aren't the nice crisp ones in the original manuals but in some cases, they actually show better how things are due to the larger pictures. Plus, you can put your own greasy fingerprints on 'em and not have to go over someone else's. .๐Ÿ˜„

Hi Neil, According to my information, D2 3J No 4086 was made early 1940. (The ser No's for 1940 went from 4014 to 4952).
I have a 5J D2 myself also from the 1940 vintage, it was a good year !!
I've found my machine easy to drive, and easy to work on, enjoy !!

JOhn.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
