The glass jar pre-filter has been broken on my D2 5U. I thought they took a wide mouth mason jar, but they are too small. The base fragment of the old jar had a ring that fit into the screw, so I guess these are not any general purpose jars. I can try Cat, as I didn't see any on EBay. Am I missing something, or were these jars special? I thought I remember fitting a common mason jar to my old D4 7J.

I just went through the same issue. The correct mason jar is the half-pint 'SPECIAL' jar. The low 'ring' on the 'SPECIAL' is a little larger in diameter that the standard half-pint. There were a few on e-bay just a couple of weeks ago, although a little pricey. I ended up buying the Cat plastic jars on e-bay.

The correct fitting jar for your model is the plastic jar, so far as I know. It has a metal reinforcing ring around the fls.ge.

I hadn't been able to find the jars on EBay, but finally came up with this listing.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/CAT-Caterpillar-5F-6658-Jar-Assembly-5F6658/271874395410?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648

They list this for a D4. Is it the same as for the D2?

Thanks to everyone for the replies and help.

There are at least two different kinds of jar type precleaners, the older one ,5B2751, that was just available for a year or couple around 1939, is threaded and used the Ball type jar 5B2746, which is specified as "Jar-Wide mouth" and ring 5B3323. The clamp type precleaner uses the 5F6658 jar and 5B3323 ring.
The jar for the threaded precleaner updates to 6L7648.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
