Anyone have particular place to get Caterpillar restoration parts like gauges, lights, switches, shift knobs, etc.? I've tried to search and I can't seem to find anything. I know Caterpillar has parts for older machines, but I'm not sure how old. Any ideas? Thanks

CAT has them but usually the PN's have been superceded. Read Neil's post for info on tracking parts as he has been doing a "Ground Up" restoration on both a J and a U series tractors. Gauges most guys use aftermarket as CAT doesn't seem to have the exact replacements anymore.

Ok, thank you. What brand gauge is most common? Stewart Warner?

you need to have a parts manual so you can take the part number and search for it--I go to Cat parts first and if its discontinued go to google to find aftermarket

Fair enough. I have a ridiculous amount of Caterpillar parts and maintenance manuals. The main reason I'm asking, is I have the option to buy an early D3 dozer for a heck of a deal, but it needs repairs. I just don't want to have to run into the issue of parts being nla. And I'd definitely want to stay away from a parts machine, due to the fact that it's turn into two machines I'd be rebuilding

I have a D3B which is a little newer, but I have never failed to locate a part at Cat, and there are quite a few aftermarket parts avaialable
