My clutch plug and hydraulic fluid plug take what appears to be a 1" hex socket. Where can I buy one of these? Can you get them in 1/2" drive or only 3/4"?

Hi, Reidhollander.
You can make your own by welding a short 5/8 SAE bolt - fits a 15/16 wrench - to a piece of about 3/4" rod roughly 6' - 12" long to act as a handle. Or somebody on here will come up with a part # if you want the gen-u-wine ar-tickle. They can still be purchased from Cat dealers, at least here in DowNunder, either as a fitting for a 1/2' square drive socket handle or as the wrench version, both of which ackshully have two separate hexs on them, the one you are looking for and a smaller one.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hi, Reidhollander.
Kee-wreck-shun - one side of the standard tool is 1 1/8" hex which is the larger - and quite possibly the one that you want. The other side is the 15/16" hex more commonly found on smaller tractors. Sorry 'bout that.

I have seen one 1/2" drive socket wrench breaker handle broken using the type that Old Magnet has posted, but that is ONLY one in all the hundreds that I have seen undone.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Made in Taiwan, but I have quite a few of their larger impact sockets and they have never failed me and the price is right.

Good luck,
Tom

Wow, may be the real deal but I think I would rather have a socket type as it take up less room in the box. But that is a cool wrench.

Yep, the antique/collectible dealers get ahold of them & the price tends to shoot up...

That long handle type is useless when reaching through holes in belly pans.
Realize that the plugs are not straight hex. The hex is actually tapered so if you want full grip you need the tapered drive.

I have to wonder why Cat would have designed them with a tapered hex...so dirt isn't able to pack into the recess or if they're cast, perhaps they added 'draft' to the mold to make them easier to remove????
Other than those 2 reasons, tapered makes little sense to me...just my 2 cents.

Probably the same reason my BMW motorcycle has a funky cap on the oil filler....so you are more likely to buy THEIR tool!

I just stopped by the Cat dealer and ordered one. I think it was $46 which I guess isn't bad considering it will last forever...
