I am new to this. I have 80 acres in southern Ohio that I think I need a small dozer for.I am not interested in spending lots of $$ for one. Just want it to move logs, creek clean up, and general grading etc. I have a massey 165 now and it won't do everything I want.I just saw this D2 5u on Craigs list and wondering if this is a good price or high. I know nothing about dozers and any information you can give me as to what to look for when going to look at one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It would be good if you can get the serial#---this will tell the year and if the main clutch is removable thru the top cover plate. You will also need to know the condition of the undercarriage as these components can be costly to replace. It appears to have the larger solid front idlers and good grouser bars.

Hi Bob. Welcome to the forum. This is as good a place as any to get sound advice on Caterpillar machines. That is a "late" model D2, so it has a little longer track frame than the earlier models. It also has the larger solid idler (front wheel) which will assist in better grading. Although the color is odd, it looks (from 4 pictures) to be in good shape. It has a Caterpillar 2S dozer blade with a #44 hydraulic unit. The idlers look to be far enough back on the track frames to indicate you have adequate adjustment and decent undercarriage. Take that with a grain of salt though. Some fellows used to take a link out of the track if the UC was well worn to try and get a few more hours out of it. A direct electric start is a nice thing, as you won't be fiddling with a pony motor. It's a love/hate relationship with the pony. For +$4700, I'd say your right in the ball park. I'd try to buy it.

In my opinion $4750 may be a bit on the high side. That all depends on the condition of the machine. If the tracks are good and tight I'd probably go for it (grouser height looks good). If it needs some work I'd keep looking. Some guys prefer direct electric start but I like pony motors (batteries can cause problems). Of course you'll have to repaint it YELLOW.👍

It does look as if it is a late model, so chances are that it has the split coupling...👍

Hmmm, on looking at the pics again, those grousers look a bit tall. I'm wondering is somebody didn't weld on some extra bits to them. Still, I'd be negotiating with the seller.

a D2 is a fun little machine, not much in the big work or grading department, I would sugest a D4 or better for real work

That being said I listed my D69U on Craigs list, I will list it here also later today

Good looking D2 there. I know who the seller is and he's very trustworthy. He knows dozers. Looks like it's priced right. Even if it's a little high you can be sure it's been looked over.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
