My first kick at posting a picture, it should be worth more than a thousand words the way I type.
Question is; what drives the pump? Is it a PTO shaft? If I pull the pump off will I need a cover plate?

Yes and yes, It is a PTO shaft and coupling assembly and you will need a cover plate if you remove the unit.

Thanks for the quick reply.
So the shaft is an ordinary 540 rpm PTO? And the cover plate will need a hole with a seal for the shaft to stick out? Anyone have one for sale?

No and No😊
The pump unit is the outer shaft support, when removed you will be left with an unsupported shaft sticking out of the full diameter hole in the rear case.

The RPM is not 540 as you are coming from the lower transmission PTO drive and would have to go through an additional gear set to get the 540 speed.

Be aware that no older Cat had a standard, exactly 540RPM PTO speed. The 540 RPM standard speed was not introduced until the late 1940's, and even after that time, a number of Cat models still did not run 540RPM on the PTO .. and in addition, multiple PTO speeds were offered on R4's and D4's.. 😞

Thanks for the complications 😊

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
