So I was gold panning today in the mountains in bc and came across this D7... I wanted to know the sn to look up the year just for curiosity, but the winch covers the plate on the back and I could not find any signs of the engine tag... It appears to have been grinder away and painted over so either it had an engine swap or some sketchy activity?... It has 5-3/4 bore cast into the engine block and the older large needle injectors... also sorry for the awful picture formatting this site does not seem to like iPhones, and I tried rotating them in my photo albums... Anyway thanks for any responses.

Hey Thomas,

It looks like a D7 3t to me. They were built from 1944 to 1955 if I'm correct. The 4t was an Army version and the 6t was a Navy version. The information plate with weights and sizes were used by the government. So that leads me to believe it maybe a 4t or 6t. Hope this helps...

Most likely a 4T built 1944-45.

By parts book
7M5054-up, 3T1-2547, 4T1-up all use the same case and frame number 2F45
3T2548-up case and frame number changes to 3F4084.

It's definitely a drive clutch. by the tag on the side I would say it is a 4T military with a cargo winch

Except that's a Isaacson winch not a Carco.

As cat silver says no H section chassis and the mud guards ( fenders for you blokes ) are pressed tin
I have seen chassis with the complete H section chassis and they are stamped 7M

Also looks like the crank handle for the pilot motor was once out the side not always thru the top what attachment needed it thru the side I wonder

Looks like a old 3 T to me
Also have been told that a 4 T wasnt built buy Cat but was out sourced back in the day the 3T was a Army machine in the Pacific dunno about this other stuff have never heard of it being a 4 T Army machine maybe that was only the US Army only thing
So much none of will never know now as most of us werent around back then or if we were we werent old enough or in a position to know

Dont want to rain on your parade Paulie my dear, but I feel definitely a 4T. now fitted with a front mounted PCU.
But originally fitted with LeTournau over head gear and most likely a rear mounted DDPCU.

You are most likely right Andrew LOL I reckon your 100% right about being a overhead gantry type set up
Who built the out sourced LeTournau PCU's and blades during the war as Im fairly sure all arent LeTournau but look almost the same only very slight differences than the genuine article and I think all parts are interchangeable

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
