My 84-year-old father-in-law just purchased another Cat. He says it is an old D4 and wants to know the year model. I cannot find anything on line.
He gave me the following number:
C47U410.32

Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Chan, welcome to the forum!
That number is not a standard Cat serial number. The 7U are the only numbers that make any sense to me, possibly it's an ex-military machine. The serial numbers are located on the left rear of the main engine and on the left rear below the seat.

A 7U41032 is 1957---don't know what the other numbers mean and there shouldn't be a decimal point in the numbers--they are hard to read sometimes

Chan: Welcome to the forum.
That D4 would be a later model in the U series as mentioned above. A popular tractor back in the day. It’s always fun to see other folks tractors. Could you possibly post some pics of your FIL tractor(s)?
You may also share your location, as people tend to seek technical advice, parts or hands on help. JM

That C should be a D, I think, as D4 7U41032 and my book says 1958, 38715-42777. A late 58 model. catskinner

Welcome Chan. Please post photos - all four sides, operator's compartment, close-up of sprocket teeth and underside of tracks where the joints are, and the controls on the left side of the tractor just in front of the driver's compartment. That's a nice late model your father-in-law has

Thanks for the help guys! This D4 is at my father-in-law's place 10 hours away from me in Liberty Mississippi. I will get pics the next time I am there. Probably Thanksgiving.

Yeh I thought the decimal point was odd. I was a Cat salesperson back in the 80's and do not recall any decimals. However, my father-in-law is 84 years-old, hard of hear and a tad ornary...so I did not argue the point when he read off the number to me.
Thanks for your help.

Well, he guessed close. He thought it is a 59 or 60. Thank you for your help.

Caterpillar serial number book shows that to be a 1957. I have a running 41493 and 41235 parts tractor and they're 57's.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
