Well first off id like to say hello sense this is my first post.

I was at a friend of mines farm a few weeks ago for the first time and i noticed out by the barn that he had an old Caterpillar D4 sitting in the weeds. I have always wanted an old cat sense i was a little kid. he said his father bought it 15 or 20 years ago to cut a road in and it had spent most of its life in the barn up until 8 years or so ago when they needed barn space for the new dozer.

im used to restoring farm tractors so i gave it a once over, the UC looked pretty good and the tracks did not seem to have any sag, the hood and sheet metal was in good shape, Rain covers on both exhaust pipes, all and all a very complete dozer.

im thinking it is all going to be dependent on the price.......if they think its made of gold for get it, but if i can get it for a song it would make the 600mile round trip worth while(300 loaded miles)

today im going back to take lots of pictures and measurements, get the SN# and what not

so what do yall think a non running D4 7U(i think its a 7U) is worth?

UPDATE:
so i am back from my little fact finding mission here is what i found out

it is a 1948 D4 7U
it has electric start on the pony motor
the oil in both the main and the pony motor is black with no signs of water
i know for a fact the pony is free, not so sure about the main...i can turn the fan blade but not the bottom crank pulley
all of the levers and foot peddles move freely and are not locked up
rain caps on both the exhaust pipes

the bad news..........
they said that they always had a problem with the track jumping off
there are repairs on the blade face
anddddddddd they are asking $3000:jaw: i almost fell out of my chair laughing, the only way i would pay that is if i saw it for myself run and drive and had all new fluids ect....i have been told it has been run and moved in the last year, but i think i can talk them down😖mokin:

here are the pics let me know if you notice anything i missed

I just yesterday bought a 7u for $2000 that the main runs good on, the pony is stuck, has new tracks and rollers.

Tracks don't sag to me translates to they are worn so we run them tight to stay on.
Look at the pictures of painter's D4, they are loose. 600 miles round trip, I would start at $1000 to get a feel of what they are thinking in value.
my 2 cents

Another reason that the Cat tracks don't sag now may because the Cat had sat in the barn (shed?) for years. After sitting for years on a dirt floor and then being towed outside because it had lost its dry storage, the rusty tracks' slack may have been taken up by rust and dirt. After a few laps around the barn yard,🙄 the tracks may show slack again. Worn out sprockets will jump its teeth in the tracks if the tracks are not kept tight. Tight tracks will on good sprockets will hasten wear of both. A close up photo of the sprockets and rails will help indentify how much life is left in them. The life left in the undercarriage of an old Cat helps give you an idea of what the old Cat is worth. Unfortunately, when the undercarriage is totally worn out in an old Cat, its present scrap value can exceed its worth as a usable Cat.

Before you start any Cat that has been sitting outside for years, pull all the drain plugs and drain off the water until oil starts coming out and then replug them. A machine that has been sitting for very long, has all of the water sitting on the botton and oil on the top. Once it is started, the oil will look like mayonase. Here in Northwest Washington State, water in the oil sumps is a real problem. Dry storage is the only real answer to limiting the rain water from entering while in long term storage. You can turn the engine over by hand or tow the Cat briefly for loading, but beyond that, drain the water off the bottom first.

That same cat was on Craigslist advertised for free “get it out of my yard”. I almost hooked on to the trailer to go fetch. Only 5000 miles return for me...
Let us know how you made out!!!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
