A Swedish member is trying to find information on what series the engine is. According to the serial number index book, this number was an Rseries lift truck. The 49A prefix was used on R60, R70, R80 lift trucks with first manufacture dates of '83-'85. He is rebuilding a 922 59A4626, first built in 1960-62. It at some point was repowered with the 49A engine. We don't know the series of the original engine which, from the service manual, was a 4 cyl. 4" x 5" diesel of 80 hp. I have a lot of lift truck books but none on the R series. Our local Cat dealer has discontinued service on all fork trucks and has no information on any of them. If we can learn what the engine is we may be able to find the correct manual if I don't have one. Thankyou for any help you can supply. Dick

Thre R60/R70/R80 series lift trucks used the Perkins 4.236 Diesel Engine.

My rack setting charts (the bible) does not show a 49A engine in anything up to 1966.
Are you sure the 4 is not a 5 making it a 59Axxxx model which would be the D320. They are not that common an engine and were only used in the 933G model loader and the 922. Plenty of industrial engines, marine and gen set applications though.

a 59A4650 would be a 1965 model near end of production at 5147.

I support OM's theory that the 49A prefix was mistakenly read and is actually a 59A engine. The Perkins 4.236 Diesel use in 49A lift trucks (60R/70R/80R) would not have 49A marked on the engine, instead it would have a unique Perkins Serial Number. Furthermore the 4.236 would be a underpowered and a nightmare to install in a 922 (smaller flywheel housing wouldn't mate to 922 torque converter, would require new frot engine support, would have to relocate cooling fan and all cooling connections, would have to relocate air inlet and exhaust, etc.)

We own a 59A 922b that the previous owner had attempted to install a Perkins in. It was not a success. It involved machining the flywheel to fit the Perkins as well as doing away with the transmission oil cooler, fabricating mounts etc.

When they gave up on it, we bought all the CAT part of it and found another D320 to put in it. Had to replace the modified flywheel and overhaul the D320 which had been apparently been submerged in flood water at some point. I was lucky to find the D320 in the first place. I thought I needed a D330, and the guy we got the "new" engine from, thought he had a D330, but we were both wrong! Then Hector had all the parts I needed to finish the project. Thanks again Hector!

Pretty typical "machine out of the weeds" story!
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
