We are in the process of replacing the undercarriage on our D4D. I purchased new Cat wear strips (4K4780) for the front idler slides in the track frames and they are the weld-in type. The new replacements are somewhat bronze in color and appear to be cast. I suspect they may be some type of manganese alloy and may need special welding rods (and maybe preheating) to weld them in properly.
We have always had good success with Harris Super Missileweld welding rods when working with alloys and dissimilar steels, would this be a good choice? Any other suggestions? Thanks!
As it turns out, the strips are a manganese alloy that welds easily with a low alloy wire and argon/CO2 gas. Just peened it well to relieve stresses and everything looks good. Many thanks to the folks at H.O. Penn for their help and advice!
