Ive ordered a set of dozer trunnions for a D7G to weld onto my D7E so that i can convert it to the larger balls. That way my blades and rakes will match. And mine where wore out anyways.

What rods have you guys had good luck with when welding these on. I have stick tig and mig welders so not sure if a single tig pass would be good then stick from there with 7018 or what.

Also not sure what metal they use to make the balls. Any input would be appreciated.

They are cast steel. I did mine with a 6011 root pass to get the penetration and finished with 7018.

Before I had a MIG I used any low hydrogen rods for those sort of jobs, now I have a MIG I just use the normal welding wire they supply here in Australia, I am told it is the equivalent of low hydrogen.

This is my usual go to on all things with a higher stress level dozer blades, plows, implements etc.

I just wondered the differnces in strength between a mig and 7018. I thought maybe a few passes with the mig then cap it all off with a few 7018 passes.

Thanks i know this is usually a debate like ford and chevy. i just curios if someone had done it and if they had any good or bad luck with certain rods or process.

This machine wont see the stress of a v cutter blade so im not as concerned with it. I know that cutting of the old ones will be the time consuming part.

looks like your on the right path. take the sweat out of it. 200f or so then root rod 6010 0r 6011 or just do all 7018. i will tell you to say away from mig as i don't know how big your's there not all the same. you can make a big mess with mig real fast as you have faster travel speeds. mig i be over 24 volts but a mig will have a cold start. only other thing is to up hand it. start at the bottom and go up. pics when done would be nice 😉

I have a big enough wire welder. But I just have that old school habit and mindset that if you want it to hold put a 6011 around it and 7018 on top. It’s never failed me so that’s what I will do.

I just neve think of a wire welder of being strong enough for that type applications.

..I'm a stick guy...root pass....6011...cap off with a stitch pass of 6013....will hold a D10 blade...

Why in the world would you use a 6013 on that application.
