I notice my transmission oil is "frothy" tan look. I think water contamination. Manual says you can wash gear compartments with "kerosene" or non-flammable cleaning fluid. Would fuel oil be ok instead of karosene? Also, what would be a brand name for a non-combustible cleaning fluid.
Also, for final drive, recommend SAE 30, or if using mineral oil, SAE 90. Isn't that a big difference? Why not the automotive SAE 80 or 90 transmission oil.
I have a D69U, thanks, fred

I use diesel fuel to wash--although it may leave a bit more oily than kerosene
automotive engine oils viscosity and gear oil viscosity have different standards as a basis--they are pretty much the same viscosity--there has been a chart posted on here that gives the equivalents--I personally use GL5 90 weight gear oil in my gear boxes

My flywheel clutch compartment has "frothy" looking oil, which means water contamination. Maintenance book does not describe washing out the flywheel compartment, but can I do a washing of it also?

I know on dry clutches they have a procedure.
I am assuming that you have an oil clutch?
If so, then I would GUESS that it could be done with a similar procedure?
Except you would not leave it to dry as the Procedures point out but instead you would refill and flush with the correct lubricant a couple of times to remove the cleaning solvent of your choice.
Personally, I would use Diesel Fuel as a flushing solvent.
My opinion of course!

Ok, thanks for your reply. Yes, I have oil clutch. The maintenance instruction do not say to flush with lubricant after wash.
However, I found on page 9 advice to add kerosene to compartments for cold weather operation, so it's ok for use in clutch compartment along with every compartment.
The instruction make mention of evaporation in crankcase and clutch compartment, so any residual will eventually work it's way out.
I plan to use diesel to wash since I filled my fuel oil tank last year at 2.20 a gallon....

wow that's a good price. I'm paying 3.30 for on-road diesel in Western NY, 50% more than you are. Would make filling up the truck $60 instead of $90....leave enough left over for a coffee and donut : )

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
