I did some digging on the forums and found a short discussion on volume compressors and track rollers. I've found a source for 00 grease for my track rollers (5 gallon pail of Shell 00 for $82.91). My question is this: What is the difference between a "volume compressor" and manually operated grease pump. Are these just the same thing?

The local farm store has a Zeeline 550. Would that do the trick?

Note: I've already got the coupler for the lube "buttons" from CAT.

I've heard that a standard grease gun injects the grease at a much higher PSI that the volume compressor, and the higher PSI can blow the seals in the rollers. I have always used a grease gun because that is all I have and as far as I can tell it has worked fine. As I said, as far as I can tell. My machines don't see any real hard use most of the time. I did work the snot out of my 1955 D2 with blade when I was clearing to expand my shop.

The Volume pump put out more greese per stroke and less presure as your reg. grease gun puts out high presure low volume. The reason is so you don't blow tyhe old leather seals out of the rollers. They range from $75 for late type to the hundreds for early 3 legged type with Best or Holt on them and evrything between. How many do you wanna buy?

Actually looking at the viscosity of 00 grease, it seems an "oil pump" would do the trick. It also would apply less pressure. For example, a Zeeline #321. (http://www.zeeline.com/Products/OilEquipment/Pumps/OilPumpsManual/default.aspx) It looks like the 321 is less pressure as well.

Willie, I only want to buy 1. Where would I find a $75 dollar one? Who makes it? Can I buy it online? (I've done some initial searches and haven't gotten anywhere.) As often as I plan on doing this (I've got one D6 that needs it, and I don't put many hours on it), spending hundreds on it is unreasonable.

I picked up two of the late model similiar to the one on the right in the photo. Are they rebuildable as far as the pump piston and packing?
Thanks!

There is a relief valve available to put on the zerk and then the pump hooks to it and limits the pressure to rollers and idlers so you don,t blow the seals. I can,t remember what brand they were but could have been Alemite. We had one at the dealer to use.
