I have a new to me D2 5U with 24v starter. It does not have glow plugs, it only has a key switch and a push button start. It does have a decompression lever. what order should I follow to start the engine? I did get it started yesterday but it took to long to fire , so I think I am doing something wrong.

I have never dealt with an electric starter on a D2 but I know they do take a while to start (my CDU has taken 3 years and still has not started:lol😊. Part of the job that the pony motor does is to pre-heat the Diesel block & head to make starting easier and "quicker".

In a mild climate and with good compression a couple of 10 to 15 second cranks should be about all you need.....even without the glow plugs. That's using a couple of good 1000a per hr batteries. If it's taking much longer a light sniff of ether should get it going.

Not much to the starting sequence so your ok there.
I do make use of the decompression lever to crank and build oil pressure but that doesn't really have much to do with the start.
