Hello, I have a question and need some suggestions;

I have an opportunity to purchase a 1954 D69U for $5,000.00

Is that a good price?

As far as I can tell, it is original and complete, it has the D318 with
a pony starting engine (electric start) Carco winch, 20" tracks, hardnose/hydraulic straight blade, dry clutch, good undercarriage
The owner rebuilt the diesel about 29 years ago, and also put in a new clutch.
The Cat has not seen extensive use since the rebuild. The pony is a little tired.
I saw it run today, it started without any trouble, and everything works.
The owner used it to do a favour for me, we used his Cat to pull my own D69U out of the weeds where it has sat for quite a few years, and put it next to my shop,
so I can get to work on rebuilding the pony engine.

Any comments are welcome, thank you.

I live just south of you across the line in Sedro-Woolley, Washington. It there wasn't a bunch of hassel crossing the border with it, I would try to buy it and trailer it home.👍 The D69U is my favorite model of Cat. The biggest concern is the under carriage and how much life is left in it. At the price of scrap around here, you can't lose at $5,000.

Thanks SSsssteamer. I suspected that 5K is good value, the u/c looks good.
As for scrap value, I heard that a local guy sold his D8H for scrap, needed some quick cash. Apparently he got $7,000.00 for it, and we are 500 miles from the big smoke, where scrap prices are generally higher. Personally, I think it would be shame to scrap a running antique Cat.
Cheers.

At $5000, being in good shape as you described, I would buy it before he changes his mind.

Hi,

I spent $7500 to get my d6 9U, carco winch, root rake, spare second set of chains and 20" pads, original complete motor and set of drive sprockets. Plus I still had to get it home....

Chance to get a D6 9U in your yard for $5000 go for it.

........................for what its worth if the Guys south of the border say its a good deal, in BC its a great deal for whatever reason iron seems to be more expensive here in BC . lve just brought a D7 after 8 months or so of looking at verious breeds i noticed there was a 20%+ premium, and its a big + in some cases !

Hope it works out for you, they have an appeal all there own these old machines.

If it is a 1954 model it should have an oil clutch.

If it's a 1954 it should have an oil clutch. Re-check the S/N to make sure.

MetalmanD69U,

My thoughts would be it is well worth the $5000 with a good undercarriage. Makes me feel good for the price I paid for mine (23xxx)last summer as well! If you get a chance post some pictures as we would like to see the old girl. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice, I know in my heart it is a good deal, just the Scot in me that is resisting opening the wallet.
I'll tell the owner it is sold, and post some pics of the new one and the old one as well.
Must post the serial number here too, the owner told me he had checked, and it was a '54, but he also said it had a dry clutch.

All the best.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
