I have been asking that very same question for some time.
There is always twice as many visitors vs. users at any given time on the BB.

We have 3000 ACMOC members
and
12000 Bulliten Board Members
Granted some of those BB members use the store only.

The question is how can we encourage those who visit or use this site, and are not ACMOC members, to join ACMOC and help support this wonderful resource the BB.

I know you are saying why join if the BB is free, well this BB does cost money to operate, so if you like it why not support it!
The BB is just one of the many things that ACMOC has to offer it members so.....
I want to encourage those who do use this BB and are non-ACMOC members or the many visitors we have on here to join up and become a ACMOC member.

It is as easy as 1,2,3.

Some of the visitors are registered users of the board, they are just not logged in. I have gotten on several times and found that my computer had cleared something and I was not logged in.

"Why are there so many using this site thayt aren't members? A friend of mine and I were wondering why!"

CatKen: A policy decision was made years ago that the club benefitted by having this bulletin board open to the public. In times past, and most likely at this time too, very knowledgeable people who were not members of ACMOC answered a good many technical and historical questions on this board, and some of those things have been published in the club's newsletter or magazine.

There has been talk over the years about posting items, such as an "archive" of old Cat information, on a section of the website available only to members of ACMOC, to encourage more to join the club. (I have donated material for this, but so far, it has not been used.) So far, it hasn't happened to my knowledge. It is probably a question of cost, and right now, ACMOC like other non-profit voluntary organizations is strapped for cash.

Not to worry CatKen. Many feel leaving the door open lets in FREELOADERS. This is true but also many good dues paying members have sneeked in with them.

I've always felt that people who use this Forum, and the other ACME Forum, specifically to access members to advertise and sell their Cat related products should pay for that access, and pay significantly more than the genuine restorer, collector, or non commercial member, we should think about setting up a "Commercial", or "Gold Membership" class where those folks pay say $500, $750 or $1,000 a year and that would include a free inside cover advert each edition of the ACMOC Magazine, size relative to your annual membership contribution.

It costs a lot to run this Forum, and the ACMOC Club, and it appears to me that rank and file financial members are providing a heavily subsidised ride to those who can and do pull tens of thousands of dollars a year out of our wallets and Check books when we buy their products advertised here, and I see no problem with them paying more for that commercial access, either that or they set up ACMOC as the exclusive Dealer of their products and they give ACMOC say a 20% cut of the retail sales that are generated each year. I've been around Ag Marketing for 27 years now and there is no such thing as a free lunch in my humble opinion, if you want to ride on the gravy train each week you need to help put diesel in the locomotive pulling it.

I also think the ACMOC Magazine Committee should review the cost of membership for normal folks like me, because to be honest I can't work out how ACMOC can produce the quality of magazine they do, and Airmail it to me here in Australia for the price they charge, it seems way too cheap? In case you are wondering, no, I haven't taken up with a Rockefeller Divorcee or Paris Hilton lately, someone to pick up my checks in life for me, but every time I get that magazine in my mail box I can't help thinking, gee, ACMOC must be losing money on these overseas memberships because just the USPS mailing charge would eat my annual subscription.

Just my 2 cents worth.
regards
Mike

Leaving the door open to the ACMOC website helps build the membership count of the dues paying membership. I for one, first came to this site for my much needed answers to my Cat questions. I knew nothing about ACMOC at the time. Old Magnet and others were quick to help me with my Caterpillar problems. I soon became a dues paying member and I am receiving the club's magazine. What really cinched the need to join up was the great Cat guys I met at Tulare, CA and also at Brooks, OR. The ACMOC magazine is an excellent publication and I have learned a lot from it. Thank you all.

After all the help I received from this site's knowlegable members in fixing my D6 9U. I will gladly pay for a membership to help keep this BB operating. Keep up the good work, and thanks for all the help received.

Thanks to all for the good conversation on this subject. You have hit upon some very good points that are spot on. I would also like to point out that not all the "guests" are here with noble intentions. Many are automated programs searching for soft security to place spam ads. Others are genuine people looking to exploit a free site for spam.

For those of you who are registered users, you are not ACMOC members until you actually send in a years worth of dues and an application. To clarify, you can be a registered user but not a member of the club. We are asking the (non-member) users to help support the club by joining. For your support, you will also receive 6 issues of the ACMOC magazine.

Thanks!
