Having finally sent the D2 to the farm i have moved onto working on my recently acquired 2 Ton.

I purchased this as a non- runner that had been sitting for about 10 years but has been manually turned over monthly.

My plan was to change out all the consumables, check the mag, clear the airways/exhaust put some oil down the cylanders and then see if i could get any life out of her.

First problem i encountered appears to be a stuck number 4 piston (yes it still cranks over)(thrown rod?). I took the rocker cover off. the valves on 4 still depress. though i have a stuck exhaust valve on#2.

There is some serous looking damage to the cam gear although i dont have enough experience with these to know if it is catastrophic. There has been something steel knocking around in there.

My next step was going to be to pull the head and see how bad it is. unless anyone has a better idea.

Could someone tell me if the pistons will come up through the top?
I have posted some pics. Could i have some input on what to do about the cam gear please. does it require replacement? can i use it. This tractor wont get any heavy work in the future.

I'm sorry to hear of those issues with the 2 Ton, though luckily there are a few around to rat parts off

(1) I wouldn't use that camshaft, ask around in WA, a good used one is not far away I'm sure, "Willsy" was looking at getting new timing gears made for his 2 Ton recently, I priced getting that camshaft gear made from scratch a few years back and was quoted around $600 here in Vic..
(2) Pistons only come out from below past the crankshaft, I'd agree with pulling the head, you can re-use the head gasket with some Permatex goo, go the extra yard on a damaged engine like this, pull the oil pump apart too and look for damage.
(3) The 2 Tons were known to throw conrods out the side on high hour machines, luckily yours might have kept the rod inside if the piston is not moving, if the crankshaft is OK it should not be too hard to find good conrods. Don't be discouraged Steve, other folks would have scrapped her for a few gold coins and she would be gone forever, but luckily she found you and will get a real good restoration.
(4) That D2 looks great, headlights too, your 2 Ton will look as good in no time!
regards
Mike

Hi Mike. Thanks for the quick reply. and your encouragement.

Luckily i have all the time in the world for this project.

I have a few more Q's for the brains trust. I cannot find a master pin on the tracks. can i just knock out any pin?
Also i plan on removing the track frames. Is this just a matter of removing the large nut (looks about 2 1/2") that seems to hold it to the shaft? anything else i should know about?

thanks in advance. I'm sure there will be more dumb questions.

regards

steve

Also. We had 3 1/2 inches of rain last week. The new D2 pulled a set of discs all day long. Including through the wettest ground. It did'nt even feel like it was any trouble. It is a far more capable machine than we expected and will get plenty of use.

There are no dumb questions when working on these old Cats, only dumb folks who don't ask before starting a job they know nothing about, I do that all the time.😆

(1) There is no Master Pin on the 2 Ton tracks I've seen, the very early chains had either a square head on the pins with a dowel at the other end keeping them secure in the chain, or 2 round ends with a dowel each end, or like your D2, interference fit pins that need to be driven out. Apparently D3 track pins are the same diameter as the 2 Ton, but a bit longer and need to be trimmed to length, I bought one a week ago from the Cat. Dealer but haven't tried fitting it yet, cost was about $7, cheapest part I've ever bought from Cat. I reckon, Part Number is 6B5278.

(2) To remove the track frames you need to remove the main spring obviously, and then undo that large nut, lifting the track frame at the front tilting it to clear the rear sprocket as you slide the frame outwards, try and assess the wear on that track frame as you are lifting it out, you might need to rebush it so your track frames are straight again. You know the drill Steve, go slow and safely, even a 2 Ton will hurt if it lands on you!😆

(3) Good news on the D2, glad she is getting the flogging she deserves!

Keep the stoopid questions coming, there's a lot of schmarter folks than me on these Forums, lurking in the shadows.
regards
Mike.
