Okay first one because it’s the most troubling to me at the moment was I had started up the 8u-8981 the other to start the 9u so I can begin work oh it. Right after we got them started it’s started to pour so we escaped to the house for a pot of coffee and let them idle was probably about 2 hours. When they rain quit we went back out I noticed the 8u was puking a little oil out of the exhaust coming out between the manifold and exhaust pipe. I’m worried I may have a bigger problem now then the low idle miss.

Second question on my 9u-32xx sp I need to split the track so I can repair the final. I can not find the master link/pin at all we have looked on both sides of the track and marked it so we advance a little at a time and recheck. My dad and I are thinking about pulling a pad and carefully cutting out another pin unless someone else has another thought.

Thanks everyone

Track
If you have a small grinder with wire wheel - go over the ends of the pins, you should be able to find the master pin.
I would work to find it before I cut a track with torch or grinder.

Throwing oil - long idle time and no chance to really heat up to working temp. Probably pulling oil past rings, just a guess, other could be pulling alongside valve stems, guides worn.

If the fan belt not tight enough, can easily overheat just idling. Cracks in head around fuel injectors , pukes up watery oil. Manditory to keep fan belts tight. Hopefully this is not your problem.

Thanks for the info on the engine she’s in for new steering clutches and brakes so after that. I will run her hard and see. On the track if it’s original pin would the cork be on the inside?

Then maybe I’m not sure what I’m looking for in my parts book and service book it looks like a small plug with a while in the center. Is that not it?

The newer master pin most likely has a dimple in the center, like a 1/4 inch drill bit would make. If doing steering clutch and brake you don't want track apart. You use a jack under a track shoe on the sprocket to roll it ahead to remove cap screws holding brake drum in place.

You need to study the book to find the small hole to put you socket and extension to get the cap screws out. to free the brake drum from final drive. Count them so you don't miss one. As well as the screws from the cross shaft side as well.

Cat engines can slobber a lot if sitting at idle for a long time. Most times it goes away using it and having engine at normal operating temperature.

Okay on that 8u it has the dimples so relatively easy to find not planning to split her tracks for the steering clutch. It’s the 9u it’s a 49 year model just wasn’t having much luck and it’s kinda hard to move back and forth when the final says I’m not moving anymore and slams us to a stop. I’m anxious to get her all pulled apart so I can get to playing with her. Thanks

many old engines slobber a bit when cold. if you get the properly warm they will clear up.

instead of perfection some times we just have to accept practicality
